Lena Matthews was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and moved to Fort Worth, Texas at an early age. She played Junior varsity and varsity basketball at Lake Country Christian, before transferring to All Saints Episcopal High School for her final two years of varsity basketball.
Lena began her basketball career in a church league before moving to Texas Express in 7th grade and just finished her 6th season playing for Coach Evan Gerhardt. After moving on to AAU basketball, Lena decided she wanted to give back to her community which helped develop her love of the game, and began to volunteer to coach with her father. In 9th grade, Lena took over the church team from her father and became head coach. She is entering her fourth year of coaching with UPWARDS basketball, and just completed her second year of skills teaching at
the Texas Express basketball summer camps. Lena is excited to begin assisting this fall under Coach Lehman where she hopes to gain from Coach Lehmans' experience in the field.
Lena has trained with West Texas Basketball Association where she has learned invaluable on-the-court skills as well as life skills from Division 1 athletes, such as Antoinette Thompson, who have gone on to play professionally and internationally.
Lena is a firm believer in creating leaders out of every player, upholding values of teamwork, community, and true passion for the game. She believes in a never-quit attitude toward sports and everyday challenges-championship wins and true skill will follow sacrifice, dedication and hard work.
